Problem Solving for Grade 5

Practice for Grade 5. This is a review for the 4th quarter exam.

  1. Superman and the Flash wanted to know who was faster by running for five seconds. The Flash was able to run five-ninths of a kilometer. If Superman finished only two-thirds of what the Flash finished, how far did he run?
  2. In a group of seventy-eight survivors of a sunken ship were stranded on an island, 13 were saved by those who knew how to swim. What percent of the survivors knew how to swim?
  3. The height of a Gundam mobile suit model is 12 inches. The real Gundam mobile suit is 720 inches or a little over 18 meters. The scale of the model is 1 is to 60. If the measurement of head of the model is 1.5 inches, how big is the real mobile suit’s head?
  4. Only 30 per cent of the people of the mountain jungle village know how to read, write and do math. If there are 426 members of that community, how many are illiterate?
  5. The new local cemetery is one and three fourths kilometers long and one and two fifths kilometers wide. If the chapel being built is shaped like a right triangle and the two sides that are perpendicular measure fourteen and a half meters each, how much of the cemetery would be left for the dead?
  6. Señora Joy bought two adjacent haciendas and a semi-circular residential lot. The square hacienda has three and three fourths hectares on each side while the other hacienda which is adjacent on one side of the first hacienda is four and seven-ninths hectares long. The semi-circular lot is attached to the rectangular hacienda on the other side and they share the same width. How much fencing will she have to buy and what is the area of her property? (Tip: Draw the figure. It should have three figures connected to each other.)
  7. In a Chinese restaurant, the aquarium for fish and shrimps is being filled with water. If the waiter used 140 cubic decimeters of water to fill five-sevenths of the tank, what is the capacity of the tank? If the height of the tank is 4 decimeters, what is the measure of the one side of the square base?
